Bonfire in the sunset

One of my favorite things I did when I was new to Grenada was go to a bonfire with some friends on Magazine Beach.  My [then] Grenada friends and I had several that first term and it was so much fun... and they were all greatly missed at this most recent beach bonfire.
But one of the facts of life here in Grenada is that friends move on and soon you're the only one left on this island... and you have to make new friends! and then you're the one leaving!
here are my sad goodbyes to some dear friends - Sarah, Amber, and Jessi :(

I'm not ready to leave. not one bit.  I'm trying to find a way to sabotage Lee's 5the semester so we can stay a little longer... haha. not really. and he will absolutely kill me if something does go wrong... and ship me back to America and force me to work.  ugh.

back to the bonfire.
I wanted to have a get together with some friends and it soon grew into a huge party!  I was so surprised that so many people came... I'm used to the SOs not wanting to come out to anything.. and here they all were with bells on!
We met so many new people I'm still struggling with names... but it will all come together soon, just in time for me to board that plane back to North America and kiss my dream life goodbye...

Lee burning his notes from previous terms!! O happy day!

Here's to many, many more bonfires with all my new friends!

Sunset City

This week Lee and I were able to catch two amazing sunsets, one at the beach and one at the pool.
I absolutely love being in the water at sunset.  The air starts to get cooler & the water feels warmer.  I love the reflection on the water & the warmness of the colors.
It is so beautiful.
We need to take more advantage of this!

I merged two pictures we took together & edited it in picnik. you know I love picnik.

and these were taken the night we stayed at the University Club a little illegally past dark with our friends Stan and Natasha. sshhh.
it was gorgeous, so it was worth it.

I'm looking forward to many many more sunsets :)

I mentioned on my other blog about winning the picnik giveaway, but I had to do so here too because I'm so excited.
I absolutely love free things!

I've been playing around a lot with the textures options on picnik and overlapping other effects...

As we all know I love picnik.com
and a favorite blog of mine is giving away a free premium membership!!
mine expired on my birthday :(
and I want to win!!
So I'm shamelessly blogging about the giveaway to get a chance to win. win. win.

my blog header was made using Picasa and Picnik and it was so easy!
& you know I like to make lots of blog headers... :)
and picnik has been tagged 7 times on this blog.

If you've never been to my other blog [Kelsey Inspired] then you should.  right now I'm totally obsessed with all things Royals. and I made this header too. duh.

learning process

So I really, really love picnik, as I'm sure anyone who is friends with me on facebook or has read my blog can tell :)
and I love doing blog headers. I'm working my way up to figuring out how to do the WHOLE blog design thing.... but I need to brush up on my html skills a bit.

I've had a few friends ask me to make them blog layouts & it's so much fun!

Last night I was working on one & just couldn't get picnik to do what I wanted it to do (and aside from picnik my only other editing options are Windows Live Photo Gallery- which is really, really good for basic editing adjustments, and... paint. does paint even count??)
I used to have picasa and it was good for creating collages but I didn't like it much other wise..... but I decided to re-download it last night just so I could overlap some images the way I wanted to
and to my surprise Picasa and Picnik had joined forces!!!  yay!!

and this was the result
a blog header for Lea Liz
She wanted a girly design, but a little bit boyish because she is the mother of adorable two year old Brody Luke.  She didn't have a title in mind so I came up with this :

Check out her blog to see more about Lea & her cute little family!
& my layout, duh.

3rd post of the day.

3rd post today and it's not even 11am!!
I'm so excited about what I just made... two of my friends (my identical twin best friends from 1st grade) have decided to start blogging again!! and they asked me to make headers for their blog!
Now, I have no earthly idea how people make actual blog layouts... you know with all the fancy cutesy stuff, but I sure know how to picnik :)

so here are my friends' new blog looks

Christmas Island

Our friend Ashley started a photography fundraiser (such a great idea!)
she used her fab skills to offer photography to students, faculty, and SOs and all the profits are going to The BelAir Home, Dorothy Hopkins Center, and PAM.
I couldn't pass this up... obviously.
Lee and I had Christmas Pictures done!
on the beach. in shorts and barefoot of course.  and I may have done a little picniking
enjoy!!

Thanks Ashley and Hilary for the pictures!

Fish Friday!

Last Friday we went to Gouyave, Grenada with CSA (Christian Student Association) for Fish Friday.  It's a street fair they have ever Friday night where they sell food and drinks... mostly the fresh fish they caught that week, but they also have other stuff lots of different breads, fried plantain, friend breadfruit, desserts, and lots of seafood!
We took a bus up with CSA for $20EC a person... the Flamboyant Hotel was taking people for $60EC a person! so it was a good deal! It takes about 50min-an hour to get there... and we only traveled 14 miles! It was a very scenic route though and I'm sad it got dark before we got there because I didn't get to see too much towards the end.... but we did see a landfill on fire! and burning is banned right now! and burning a landfill is double bad! I had wondered where all our garbage had been going though.... hm.
So we finally made it & it just a tiny town that is the "Fishing Capital of Grenada" not a major accomplishment when the island only has like 10 towns, but they do have a lot of fish there!  The food vendors were set up along two streets barely leaving enough room to walk through and there were a ton of people crowding in.... and it was HOT.  I wore jeans because it usually gets a little cooler a night........ not that night.
I had fried breadfruit (because I don't eat fish.... well except the Marlin I had tonight, but that's another story) and a garlic bun and LLB!  Lee had a fishcake on a coconut bake bun... it sounds good.. and he LOVED it! and it was only $2EC! and later he and his Dad had lobster! whole tails! for $50EC... I tasted it but I can't make myself like lobster.... yuck.
They also have live music.... drums and people dancing.  It was fun, but in my opinion not worth the drive more than once or  twice.  A great thing for a person visiting to do and see & everyone should go at least once! but I'll save the money it takes to get there & eat elsewhere. but this is also coming from a non-fish eater. so....

Hiking through Grand Etang

you'd think that being sick for a week I'd have tons of blog updates... I mean I really had nothing else to do, but blog, but I didn't.  Every time I wanted to, I just felt too tired... like blogging takes a ton of energy? I don't know... anyway... I have lots to update about!  I just spent the previous week living a fabulous Grenadian vacation! and I want to talk about all the cool things we did... starting with going to Grand Etang!

Last Thursday, we went down to St. George's and caught the #6 bus to Grand Etang... $6EC per person... much less than a taxi.  Lee even skipped school for this event!!! for the first time ever!! haha
So we pile into the reggae bus and the guy just keeps adding people... so Lee and I end up sharing on of the fold out seats, about 12 inches wide. seriously. My body was turned completely sideways and I was pressed up against the window... even so we headed off into the mountains!
and when I say mountains, I mean actual mountains. We drove up to the highest drive-able point in Grenada, 1910ft above sea level... up winding, steep roads.  Several times the wheels squealed going around corners and I was convinced we were going to tip over and roll off the mountain... and my life would surely be over because I was protected by nothing but the window!
As you're going up the mountain there is a a very noticeable change in scenery and temperature... it really is a rainforest. while at sea level we are experiencing a horrible drought and there isn't a speck of green grass left... up there things are lush and green (even though I've heard they haven't had much rain there either) but maybe it retains it's greenness because it's so much cooler.  It instantly becomes much more comfortable of a temperature.
We found out once we got there that there was a charge of $5EC or $2US per person to enter the trails and lake area... when we went before with the school it was covered, but whatever... Grenadians have got to make their money somehow and tourists are willing... and it's worth it!
Grand Etang Lake is also where Grenada has been getting a lot of their water during the dry season.  It's a crater lake that sits on top of one of Grenada's extinct volcanoes.
this is the panoramic view I put together...
We hiked around the entire lake! not my idea... but Lee led us down the trail and I followed... but it was fun!  We saw a lot of cool stuff... Grenada's plant life is so interesting to me.... not only do they have palm trees, fruit tress, nut trees, flowering trees, regular trees with big leaves, and huge 300 year old trees... they also have cacti and bamboo growing all over the place.... weird. but I like it. and there are so many beautiful flowers!
 collage I made on picnik.

once we emerged from the jungle we went up the hill to get a view of the lake

At the top of the hill, where the buses let you off they have lots of little shops set up for souvenirs, snacks, and drinks... and men playing music and making up songs.. and women with fruit on their heads wanting you to pay to take a picture with them. that's the job I want. dressing up and having people pay to take a picture with you....... hmmmm perhaps I can set up shop at Canada's Wonderland this summer while Lee is working ;)  or at least at Niagra Falls... I just need an idea of a getup.

anyway, before we left I was so happy to see some Mono Monkey's come out to see if anyone had any food for them... they weren't as scary to me this time, they were cute. but I still didn't get close.  I was sad to hear that a lot of the monkeys died in hurricane Ivan :(  they weren't actually meant to live here anyways... they were brought over from Africa, but hopefully those little monkeys are busy multiplying!

Wednesday, Wednesday

I now have a cold... it's weird to have a cold in the heat, but I think it makes it a little better... I feel good when I'm outside, but I'm pretty congested. It's because I've been around kids everyday!
Saturday was Beach Day and I went to the Valentine's Day party and did face paintings for kids
Monday we went to Queen Elizabeth's Home
Tuesday and today I have been at the Lime's After School Program.... and I think all these kids have a consistent runny nose. I do sometimes too.... haha so I can't say much.

Today I thought our transformer blew up.... there was a loud pop and something was burning.... it was scary.  I rushed over and unplugged our computers (while Lee sat there looking around...) incase they were gonna get a power surge or something.  My computer is my lifeline here. haha what would I do without it!?
But after I returned the transformer to the hardware store & found out that it was working perfectly fine... I came home and found out that it was the serge protector that blew.  It DID protect our computers... I'll give it that  So I had to go back to the hardware store and get a new power strip and explain to the people there that they were right, my transformer does work. haha. but I had to spend $40EC on a new power bar. ugh.

Limes was crazy today.  The kids were bouncing off the walls!  I try to be as nice to the kids as possible because I'm sure they get yelled at at school and home a lot.... but MAN today I could have yelled at some kids. Throwing chairs, hitting, screaming... one boy had a nail he was sticking kids with! aaaaahhhhh.
But then there are the really sweet little ones that just want attention and I love it when they sit on my lap and let me hug them :)
Yesterday and today I had the older kids... I'm not really sure how old they are I think between 11-14 or so... a few of them are really good and helpful and actually play the games and then there are the frustrating ones that are 'too cool' for Limes. but they're still there. so they're obviously not too cool. they act like they don't want the snack or the juice... and I know they are hungry so I pretend like it'll make me happier if they eat it.  We did multiplication flash cards today & these poor kids do not know their multiplication tables!  I guess in school they get to use a chart & never had to memorize them.... jr. high kids! But they started getting the hang of it... at least x0 x5 x11 x10.... the easy ones we have established :)
Tomorrow is field day! hallelujah for being outside where they can run free without fear of them falling out a window! haha

In other news... the grocery store was fully stocked today.  And since I had, had kinda a rough day I bought ice cream.  They had the like carboard box kid for $14EC... not too bad, considering some of the icecream is like $40EC. They usually don't stock until Thursday but I ran into Sherry and she said she heard they had milk... so I went & they had everything! even cucumbers! I hadn't seen a cucumber the entire time I've been here.
Oh the small victories living in Grenada!
I'm already starting to miss it here.... I know we have to leave in May and I'm sad. and then next December we are leaving for good.....
:( life is too short!

here are some new photo's i've picniked.

Picnik!

I am obsessed with picnik.com today... it's really fun, easy to use, and FREE! :)
It started by making a picture for Lee for Valentine's Day and then I started picnik-ing everything!!!
Here are a few...

I don't think I blogged about Independence Day before.... it was February 7th.  The entire country is still plastered with all things green, red, and yellow.  They are very proud of their Independence!!
If you're from Ironton.... think like we are about the Memorial Day Parade! only not quite as good :)
We went down to the beach to check out the festivities briefly because Lee studied the entire day... and there were tons of boats just pulled up on the shore to celebrate, and 3 cruise ships!!! 3! it was crazy. There was music, food, tents... all that you would expect.  We didn't partake of any of the food.... mostly because we're cheap, not because we aren't adventurous.  The national dish is oil down. the name is enough for me! It's meat cooked in cocount milk until it is all absorbed into the meat..... and there are vegetables and dumpling-ish things. sounds wonderful right? haha
My favorite of the day was the fireworks at night!  They were nothing compared to our fireworks at home on July 4th... but I have never seen fireworks in February before, so no complaining here!! I could see them from campus... so I just walked outside our apartment and looked up :)

next we have our hiking trip to Grand Etang Lake.  This was before I started blogging faithfully, so I don't remember if I wrote about it or not...We went the first week we were here.  It's a volcanic lake & there was a gorgeous view at the top of the mountain... well worth the horrid bus ride up the mountains!  We drove to the highest point a car can get on the island and they hiked the rest.  We saw mono monkeys, gorgeous flowers, and a good bit of the jungle!

One of my favorites on picnik is the polaroid!

The waterfall at Mt. Carmel
just enhanced a little :)

This setting is called the 1960s
I wonder what Grenada would have been like in the 60s.... probably a lot like it is today!

This used to be the banner for my blog... but I started getting so many pictures I loved I had to change it....
I still love it though.
