23 is the magic number this week! and I'm just bored enough to not want to go to sleep (regardless that it's 11:52pm) and yet not motivated enough to clean or work on projects for my etsy shop.
So blogging it is!
I'll start with my pregnancy because that's probably what I'd have the least to say about.
Things are still going great and uneventful for the most part.
I had an appointment Monday and everything was fine. It was the shortest appointment ever. Weight, blood pressure, pee in a cup, measure belly, listen to heartbeat... any questions? I typically have very low blood pressure - like 80/50 and this time it was 110/55, which is still normal, but high for me. It's maybe better if it's slightly higher than my normal because I often get light headed if I stand up too quickly.
I've gained about 10lbs and am starting to look more pregnant. My clothes still fit but a lot of my jeans (except for the stretchy ones) are too uncomfortable to wear at this point. I have all these really cute pairs of maternity shorts that I was all prepared with but it's been COLD and I haven't worn shorts in weeks. I only have 2 pair of maternity jeans and they're still too big at this point. I've been re-wearing the same 3-4 pair of stretch jeans and dresses of course.
I'm at that point though where I just look chubby - which isn't fun when you're getting dressed :/
I feel like my baby bump is a little lower this time around. With Leo I felt big really high up, like right under my boobs, but this time I don't feel that yet. It's kinda silly, but I hope I carry a little lower this time because that makes a cuter baby bump. haha.
Other than weight gain, eating a lot, and peeing more frequently I don't feel much different and don't have any other symptoms. Thank goodness!
At 23 weeks baby boy is over a pound and is about 8inches long! I'm feeling him move a lot, especially when I lay down at night. Lee has felt him a couple times but usually when I say oh feel! baby stops moving.
Leo is fascinated by all the talk about baby brother. He knows he's a boy and tries to talk to him through my belly button. The other day he had a little toy and was giving himself an ultrasound and saying baby! baby! He also tries to listen with his toy stethoscope. Once he was doing it and my stomach growled and his eyes got huge! haha
Leo is 23 months. 2 weeks away from being 2.
Crazy.
I don't even know where to begin with this child. I know I'm his mother, but he is amazing. He blows my mind every day. He is so smart. He only needs to hear or see something once to have it memorized.
He loves to sing - he can sing his ABCs (sorta,lol), Jesus Loves Me, Row Row Row Your Boat, Wheels on the Bus, Elmo's World, Spiderman, Batman, and his favorite bedtime song is I Can't Stop the Rain (which is doubly precious because this is one of Lee and I's "songs" he used to sing it to me all the time when we were dating... now Leo requests the rain song before bed. Oh my heart)
He also likes to drum and has a great little dance when he's drumming on his toy bucket flipped upside down. yea...
One of his absolute favorite things to do is draw, paint, color, etc. He asks to do art. It is the BEST. I mean I obviously love art and crafts so doing little painting projects with Leo is a very enjoyable part of my day. And if I need some time to get something done he is so happy to sit at the table with blank paper and markers. He's really good at putting the lids back on the correct colors too!
Which leads me to - colors. For about a month now Leo has had his colors down. You can even quiz him about what color something is even if he can't see it.
One day last week we were in the car and I said something about Nanny and Leo said - I want ride Nanny's red car.
My mom's car IS red! He hadn't seen that car for over a month and I definitely haven't talked about it! Crazy. He also talks about mommy's grey car and daddy's white van :) which we are getting RID of that van this weekend! Oh Happy Day!
Leo can recognize very easily 20 letters of the alphabet. He's still working on the weird ones - q,u,v,x,y, and k... even though he knows how to say Kelsey. haha
He'll sit and do his alphabet puzzle and say - A Apple, B Batman, C Cookie. It's the best. He picks out letters everywhere we go. License plates, signs in Target, on trucks driving down the street... I know that letter recognition doesn't necessarily correlated to reading, but I'm still impressed.
He's counting to 3 and recognizes the numbers too!
He can identify pretty much every single DC and Marvel superhero. He LOVES them. Batman and Joker are his favorites... then Ironman and Spiderman.
There's basically nothing in any book that he has that he doesn't know anymore. Every animal, instrument, household object. He's got it. His vocabulary exploded! We can have full conversations now.
He also loves to help in the kitchen. Lee lets him do dishes all the time and so he loves to pull a chair to the sink and play in the water and wash stuff. haha. It keeps him busy!
He also cooks. If you ask him how to make macaroni and cheese (his #1 favorite food) he'll say - water, pot, hot, bubbles, roni, milk, butter, cheese, spoon.
hahahaha I'm not kidding. He knows the steps.
On top of being so smart he really is incredibly sweet. Every morning when I open his door he says - Hi Mommy!! He's so excited every time.
He likes to give kisses. He wants me when he's hurt. He likes to talk to baby brother. He gets crazy excited when Daddy gets home. We hear the lock turn and he jumps up and runs to the door.
He can thrown some tantrums but thankfully they are very few and far between and have ALWAYS correlated to a missed or shortened nap. I used to roll my eyes when parents would say - oh he's tired. But seriously, it messes kids up. lol.
Last week one day Leo only had about an hour long nap (he usually sleeps at least 2) and he woke up wanting an orange straw for his drink. We don't own an orange straw. He was so sad and cried and cried and cried. He refused all drinks and all colors of straws. It was the most upset I've ever seen him. He's not typically a crier... not when he's left in the nursery, not when he gets hurt, not when he's told no..... but man don't have an orange straw when he wants it and it was the end of the world.
We've been very consistent and mindful of doing timeouts lately. He only gets timeout pretty much if he hits. I know it sounds crazy, but I can't think of many other situations where he's misbehaved to warrant a time out (I swear, he is SUCH a good toddler)... but sometimes he does hit. He usually hits Lee, but occasionally me too. We say - Leo you're in timeout go sit on the couch. He'll walk over and sit and not get up until we come talk to him. He's so good even in timeout! He started catching on really quickly though and as soon as he'd sit on the couch he'd start saying - Sorry Daddy!! Daddy I sorry!! Come here Daddy! I sorry!
It's adorable. hahaha. But he stays in timeout for 2 minutes. Ped said 1 minute for however old they are so we just started with the 2 because he's almost 2.
It's only been a couple weeks but I'd say for us timeout has been extremely effective. We just have to be consistent and do it every time he hits, even if we're not at home.
So yea, over all everything is great and I am looking forward to 2! I read that in Europe they call it the boundary stage rather than using the phrase "terrible twos" which I like much, much better!

Leo 22 Months
On Christmas Day Leo turned 22 months old! Just 2 months until he's a 2 year old!
It really seems like he's 2 already. I got some pretty skeptical looks when I flew with him last week as a lap child... probably Leo's last free flight!
At my midwife appointment last week we weighed and measured Leo while waiting and he's approximately 32 lbs and 37-38 inches tall. It's hard to measure a moving kid!
At 22 months Leo is very entertaining. While my inlaws were here visiting and when we went to my parent's house were seriously just sat around watching him do stuff and getting him to perform. haha
One of his newest things is singing Frosty the Snowman. We showed him this movie twice over Christmas and he LOVED it. Every snowman is Frosty and if the snowman doesn't have a hat it's a major problem.
He's also getting better at singing his ABCs everyday. We thought he was singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star the other day because he actually has the tune of it down!
He loves letters. He's very good at identifying letters and what word we associate with them. For instance - A is for Apple, B is for Batman, C is for Cookie, D is for Daddy, E is for Elmo, F is for Fish, etc. There are just a couple that we are still working on! He is so much fun to teach because he picks it up so quickly and enjoys it.
And no surprise his favorite breakfast cereal is Alphabits. They were on Target's Cartwheel one day for 50% off so I thought I'd try them now every single morning he asks for them.... awesome.
Speaking of eating.... Leo pretty much doesn't anymore.
He started getting picky here and there and then we went to Ohio for 10 days over New Years and he basically refused any food that wasn't - cereal, milk, bananas, oranges, grapes, cheese, yogurt, macaroni and cheese, pizza, peanut butter and jelly, muffins, donuts, cookies, candy, ice cream - you get the idea.
I can't remember the last time he ate a vegetable or meat willingly.
Now that we're home there's definitely going to be a better focus on eating (for him and me and baby!). I'm going to have to sneak vegetables in where I can.
Today we painted and he was so good about asking for each color and identifying the correct color, he has still been getting confused a little here and there but this morning he named each color perfectly. - red, yellow, blue, green, orange, purple, white, and black.
His favorite colors, or at least the ones he learned the quickest were green and orange.
I really could go on and on about how smart he is... he knows his shapes, he can match his memory game cards, he can identify anything you point out to him around the house or in a book (even stuff I have no clue how he learned!), but what I'm most proud of with Leo is how well behaved, yet independent he is.
My mom was saying the other day - it's weird but he's actually a very rational almost 2 year old.
He does very well if I explain to him what we are doing and why or why not he can do it. He understands that if he does _____ he can do _____.
I mean don't get me wrong he still slapped me in the face last week and if he's feeling really bold will yell NO when I ask him to do something, but the majority of the time he's actually very pleasant to be around.
I'm writing this down to remind myself of these things when and if things change in the coming months. haha

Life update - Leo 19-20 months
I really want to keep up with the monthly updates about Leo. He changes so much and is learning at an unbelievable speed I want to remember when and how he changes.
But it's hard to actually sit down and write about it, especially now that I have opened my Etsy store!
I've wanted to have a handmade store for a very long time but the timing finally felt right a couple months ago - especially because we have A LOT of expensive things coming up in our lives. The biggest on the horizon being Lee's mission trip to Honduras in March. It's a really great opportunity for him to go work in an overseas clinic that has been established for a long time and is sustainable... rather than just going into a place and treating people and then leaving them without a doctor again. It's a lot like the trip he recently went on to Nicaragua.
So back to my shop - I named it Sassafras Circle.
Coming up with a name was HARD.
Finally my sister mentioned using Sassy - which is what my nieces call me and then that evolved into Sassafras. And circle because the main thing I make in my shop is wreaths.
Here's a few examples -
It's been a bit of a slow start, but I've had about 20 orders so far, so it's been worth it. I hope it keeps growing and getting bigger and better!
I don't remember the last I updated, but Lee is now a 2nd year resident and staying busy with all his stuff. We're in the middle of interview season - for residents to start next July and so Lee has been busy with reading applications and doing interviews. Friday he's going to a recruitment event in Tampa and in December we're going to Amelia Island for Lee to go to a conference. AND even more exciting!!!! With our credit card points we are getting 2 free tickets to Disney and taking Leo for Christmas on our way to the conference!!!
It will be my first time at Disney and Lee hasn't been since he was in the 3rd grade, so I'm pretty excited! and hello, free!!!!
Leo is now about 20.5 months old. I really will try to do better with this updates... because I'm not exactly sure when he started doing certain things, but whatever.
He will not attempt to say any word you tell him to. It's hilarious and adorable. My favorite is getting him to say names. He has a pretty big vocabulary now and can identify almost everything he sees.. He'll say and sign please and thank you pretty regularly without being prompted. He only recently started saying thank you rather than just signing. He says sorry so sweet and cute that whatever he's done I couldn't possibly be mad about anymore.... although it's usually because he's just gotten too rough and bit or hit me :/
He's completely potty trained while he's naked, but not at all while he's wearing clothe, underwear, or a diaper. Something completely turns off that sensor that he has to pee when there is fabric touching him. Oh well, he's still young and I'm not in a big rush to potty train him, but it is AMAZING to not have to think about diapers during the day while we're home. If we stay home all day he only uses 2 diapers - nap time and bedtime.
He even attempts to dump his pee/poop into the big potty after he's done... which is sweet, but 1 time turned into a disaster when I didn't get to the bathroom fast enough. I just leave the door open and he goes as he pleases on his little potty. Well he started shutting the door when he has to poop (how does he even know?!) and so I let him be alone for about a minute and then go check, well a couple days I heard the big toilet lid open and got there in time to see him trying to dump his poop into the potty, hahaha, well one day I didn't and he missed. and it was a disaster.... and he was trying to clean it up. oh man. It was do disgusting but he was so cute trying to wipe it up.
I really have the sweetest little guy. If he spills something he'll run and get a towel and try to clean it up.
Like I mentioned before he does sometimes bite or hit. Like once a day or so if he gets overly excited or I'm ignoring him usually. He plays a lot rougher with Lee, they wrestle a lot. But he never bites Lee, just me. It's weird. He knows he shouldn't and if I catch him in the act he'll look up at me with those big brown eyes and his mouth open with his teeth out like.... oooh yea, I'm not supposed to do this.
ugh. Oh well. I don't think he's ever bit another kid, at least no one has ever told me he has, and he's getting much better with me too.
His favorite things to do are play with water, play with balls, run around wild at the play ground and slide and climb, and play his guitar and sing. He's started mimicking Lee when he sings and will squint his eyes and open his mouth really wide. It's hilarious and I've been trying to catch it on video.
We recently got back from a trip to Ohio to be with my sister Molly when he had her new baby boy Maximus. I was able to be in the room when she gave birth! And Leo was so sweet with the baby.
With his 2 yr old cousin Rynnlee.... not as much. haha. They were very competitive and I think encouraged each other to be a little more wild than usual. But they had fun. We got to go trick or treating with cousins and Leo and Rynnlee were Thing 1 and Thing 2.
We also spent a lot of time at my parents house and Leo absolutely loves loves loves my dad's animals. I think the goats and the roosters were his favorite. He would just run around and squeal. He was so happy. He really liked getting into their cages too. haha. He would climb in and shut the door behind him. What a weird kid.
He really bonded with my dad which was fun. He'd wake up in the morning and the first word he'd say was Poppy?! and he'd want to go outside with him and ride his "tractor" - lawnmower and help him feed the animals.
He didn't care as much for the small animals - pigeons or baby bunnies. He preferred the dangerous animals like big mean roosters or goats with horns.
We also got to visit about 4 times with my friend Michelle and her 3 kids and that was really fun. I hope Leo grows up being close to his cousins and my friends from home's kids too. It'll be nice for him to have family all over the place.
While we were in Ohio we met 4 new babies! My nephew Max, my sorta family I'll call her a 2nd cousin kinda thing Addie, my friend Ellen's little guy Keegan, and my friend Caitlin's new baby girl Aaliyah.
I'm so thankful that surprisingly it's pretty cheap for me to fly home and I get to visit my family somewhat regularly... although I'm not gonna lie, I missed Florida.
We had really amazing November weather and it was in the 70s most days, but those cold mornings.... no thanks. I decided that cold feet, cold toilet seats, being cold getting out of a shower - all those things are things I do not miss at all.
And yea, that's about it.
Life is pretty good. We're just trucking along and are starting to think about long term what we (Lee) want to do and where we'll live. But for now we're enjoying life today.
I'm typing this while still in bed because after working several 24 hr shifts and another one tomorrow my husband offered to get up with Leo this morning and let me sleep in.
He owed me.
Hope he made breakfast!

18 Months
We have a 1 and half year old!!
I would say something about how that's hard to believe... but honestly I've felt like Leo was this old for a while now. He seems like he's been here with us forever! I barely remember life without this adorable little wildcat running around.
I think he seems older because he has literally been running for about 8 months now, almost half his life.
He is the funnest baby. Everyday is an adventure... and while I would like to just lie around and relax every once in a while, it's a blessing to have such an energetic, healthy boy to keep me on my toes.
At 18 months Leo is babbling non stop all day long.
His favorite words by far are Mama and no. If you ask him a question the answer is always, always, always no.
He knows the difference between yes and no, but he prefers to start with a no every time, just in case.
He's added a lot of new words to his vocab this month - turtle, go, car, truck, dog, duck, star, ice, Batman (lol), circle, Neff (our fish that died), potty, poop, pee (potty training in our future perhaps?! lol)... and babies - he almost always says babies instead of just baby. I think he's trying to make sure that I have twins next time around - yikes!
I counted recently as I was filling out the development survey for his 18 month appointment and he has about 30 words! He hasn't started to put together 2 words yet really. Every once in a while he will be I think it's more of an accident.
One of his favorite things to do, which is really silly, is have this green knit blanket thrown over his head. It's hysterical. He'll bring it to me and say peeeeeeeeeease!!!!! and just look at me with those big sparkling eyes until I put it over his head and then he'll squeal with delight and walk around the room looking like Cousin It. We do this about 15 times a day.
It's really sweet because that green blanket is one of the first things I remember Lee buying me as a gift. In college - probably freshman year, we lived in a really small town and one of the only stores, and definitely the only place open 24/7 was Walmart so we'd often go there on dates and walk around. I found a comforter set that I loved - it was brown with green polkadot trim and coral pink flowers on it. The green knit blanket and pillow went with it. I bought the comforter for my dorm and later he surprised me with the matching blanket and pillow. That Lee has always been the best.
Anyway, Leo, Leo, Leo.
He has developed my love for art! We like to draw with crayons and sidewalk chalk and paint with water colors! He's so fun to make art with and in my unbiased opinion, very talented. ;)
I'd say meal time is getting a little more stressful. His ped told us to expect his appetite to slack off, but some meals it's pretty difficult to get him to eat and especially hard to try and like new things. It's super easy to fall into the habit of just giving him what he likes. He has never refused yogurt, pizza, cheese, grapes, watermelon, or crackers. haha. But can or should a kid live on that? Probably not.
He will still eat pretty much anything dipped in guacamole or hummus but I'm trying to not resort to that as often either. Not that either of those things are bad, I just want him to be a little more flexible and to eat whatever I give him, you know? Which I realize may not ever happen.
I have a separate food post I'm working on. Just some stuff that's worked for us.
We're starting up our MOPS group again next week which I'm really excited about. We had a meeting recently for the table leaders and I left Leo in the young toddler room and when I picked him up they recommended that he go to the 2 yr old room. I'm always nervous though that that means that he's been a bully to the smaller kids but they assured me that it wasn't and that he was just "mature" whatever that means. But whatever, I'm glad he'll be with some older kids and hopefully pick up some of their good qualities. One can dream right?
Leo is very independent already though insisting to do most things himself. I read an article recently about parents needing to let their kids explore and figure out physical things sometimes and it's one of those things that I for some reason have never had an issue with. I give Leo a very long leash... I'm totally the parents that's making other parents at the park nervous. lol. He's been climbing the stairs and sliding by himself at the playground since about 16 months. This week he swung on a big kid swing rather than the baby swing!
This past month Leo got a hair cut, went to Canada and hung out with family and friends at camp, went to a butterfly conservatory,
His Nanny came to Florida for a week while his Daddy was in Nicaragua.
And we've attempted to spend some time at home, which is difficult for me, haha I like to be on the go.
I have lots lots more videos that I was planning on posting, but youtube isn't cooperating right now. So maybe I'll update it later, but probably not.
I would say something about how that's hard to believe... but honestly I've felt like Leo was this old for a while now. He seems like he's been here with us forever! I barely remember life without this adorable little wildcat running around.
I think he seems older because he has literally been running for about 8 months now, almost half his life.
He is the funnest baby. Everyday is an adventure... and while I would like to just lie around and relax every once in a while, it's a blessing to have such an energetic, healthy boy to keep me on my toes.
At 18 months Leo is babbling non stop all day long.
His favorite words by far are Mama and no. If you ask him a question the answer is always, always, always no.
He knows the difference between yes and no, but he prefers to start with a no every time, just in case.
He's added a lot of new words to his vocab this month - turtle, go, car, truck, dog, duck, star, ice, Batman (lol), circle, Neff (our fish that died), potty, poop, pee (potty training in our future perhaps?! lol)... and babies - he almost always says babies instead of just baby. I think he's trying to make sure that I have twins next time around - yikes!
I counted recently as I was filling out the development survey for his 18 month appointment and he has about 30 words! He hasn't started to put together 2 words yet really. Every once in a while he will be I think it's more of an accident.
One of his favorite things to do, which is really silly, is have this green knit blanket thrown over his head. It's hysterical. He'll bring it to me and say peeeeeeeeeease!!!!! and just look at me with those big sparkling eyes until I put it over his head and then he'll squeal with delight and walk around the room looking like Cousin It. We do this about 15 times a day.
