Midterm Social - Fall 2011
We had our party on Grand Anse Beach with water sports! I got to ride the banana boat twice... and it was..... tame. haha. I didn't get a chance to ride the tube which I heard was a bit more thrilling of a ride.
We had 80 people there all wanting rides, quite a switch from last term when I got to ride the tube 5 times huh?
Good job SO board for planning and executing a great party!

77 days of summer
Today I counted and I have 77 days left in Grenada.
77 precious days.
I decided to go out with a bang and have vowed that I will go to the beach every single day for the next 77 days. everyday. even if it's just for a couple minutes.
even if it's raining.
ha
Tonight I started my tradition by watching the sunset on Grand Anse Beach...
it was gorgeous and peaceful and reminded me of how amazing this place is.

Sunset City
This week Lee and I were able to catch two amazing sunsets, one at the beach and one at the pool.
I absolutely love being in the water at sunset. The air starts to get cooler & the water feels warmer. I love the reflection on the water & the warmness of the colors.
It is so beautiful.
We need to take more advantage of this!

and these were taken the night we stayed at the University Club a little illegally past dark with our friends Stan and Natasha. sshhh.

Independence Day Beach Picnic
We celebrated the 4th of July a little early and Canada Day a little late.
mostly because it was a Saturday, a day that works for most people, and I'm so glad we did! The weather was perfect!!

just beachy
Oh I love the beach. I am trying to make it my goal to go at least twice a week. should be easy right?? When Mom was here I just realized how much I take the fact that its down the street for granted. I need to go MORE!

Work Boat Regatta
This weekend on Grand Anse Beach was the work boat regatta!
I actually went last year and didn't realize it. I just went to the beach on Independence Day and thought that they brought out the boats for the festivities, haha.
It is so fun to see the boats race & all the different colors!

Thankful for a beach day
this past weekend was Grenada's Thanksgiving and Lee got 2 days off of school!!! 2!
he won't get any for American Thanksgiving :( so I'll be home watching the Macy's parade alone.
He studied Friday and Monday (his days off) and took a break for Saturday and Sunday!
It was a great two days together... even better than the break after midterms.
Saturday we went to the beach, went grocery shopping together (which is something I really love to do together, makes me miss when we were first married and went on grocery adventures at Kroger to get all the deals) came home and watched college football, had dinner and ice cream with candy bar cut up in like a blizzard, and watched a movie!
I almost took this little guy home until he crawled out and got his goo all over my hand and I screamed!

yay beach
today was a good day.
we had our first meeting for the SO board. I'm excited to get back into things & going to the orphanage (I went yesterday!! & it was so fun & I had missed those kids so much!) & Limes... Limes is my favorite. I'm excited.
and afterward Amber and I went to the mall and got smoothies & went to the beach.
It was the perfect beach day. and Grand Anse is so beautiful.
tomorrow we're going snorkeling! yes!

Grenada 101
I realize that I haven't written much lately actually about Grenada... as a country.
So I'm going to try to think up some things about Grenada you may find interesting & to prove that it actually is a foreign country, haha
About Grenada - pronounced Gri-nay-da, not Gren-a-da, althought it was named by the Spanish after Granada, Spain
It is an island nation of about 100,000 people located in the Southestern Caribbean, 100 miles northeast of Venezuela. There are actually 7 islands, the 3 largest are Grenada, it is about 20 miles long by 12 miles wide, Carriacou, & Pettite Martinique. The capital is St. George's. It was discovered by Christopher Columbus also in 1492 & was inhabited by the Native Caribs. It has been owned by the French, British, and Spanish in it's history & became an independent nation in 1974.
On October 25, 1983 Grenada was invaded by the United States after the coup and the execution of the former Prime Minister Maurice Bishop. US officials said the execution of Bishop and general political instability, as well as the presence of 800 US medical students at St. George's University were the reasons for military action. But this was also during the Cold War and after overthrowing the government in 1979 Maurice Bishop made alliances with Cuba and other communist nations & was believed to be building an airport for military purposes...
The invasion lasted less than 48hrs and 45 Grenadian troops were killed, 358 wounded & at least 24 civilians were killed. Clint Eastwood made a movie about it called Heartbreak Ridge.
The majority of people in Grenada are decedents of African Slaves brought here by the French and British & it is estimated that only a 1/3 of people born in Grenada still live here, which is why the population is still only around 100,000. Most people immigrate to Trinidad, Barbados, NY, Toronto, and London.
Most people in Grenada are Christian, there is a very strong Catholic influence & there is a small population of Rastafarians.

-It's against the law for any of the hotels to be over 3 stories or taller than the palm tree, atleast the ones on Grand Anse... & I LOVE this about Grenada. the buildings don't interfere with the landscape.
-Grand Anse Beach is in the top 10 beaches in the world!
-There are 45 beaches in Grenada! I think I've been to 9. and driven past many many others! lol
-There is a Wet and Dry Season. Wet season runs from June-December & is hot and humid. January-June is the dry season & is cooler because of the wonderful trade winds.
The language & common phrases
Ay Boy! - working with the kids at Limes I have heard this one soooo many times. this is how they call each other (& how adults yell at them) I've heard the 4 yr olds yelling AY BOY at a 10 yr old to get his attention... it's funny. and on field day I've used it a couple time, it's insane they don't listen to their own name being yelled but if you yell ay boy they all turn and look... haha. and it's fun to say
No problem - if you ask for something in a restaurant or where ever the typical response is no problem, can I have some more water? no...... problem. I always think they're saying no, but then they trick me with adding the problem. and 30 minutes later they actually will bring water. lol.

Lime or Limin - means lots of things relax, drink, a cell phone company.
Jus now - I still don't get this one some times too.... today a girl told me she would be back jus now. and then walked away & I'm thinking no... just now is well, now. you mean in a minute. the bus driver today said we'd be leaving jus now & I got excited that we'd actually be leaving & 20 minutes later we did...
Afternoon - they don't say hi or hello when you pass on the street, they say afternoon and they've totally dropped the good off of good afternoon... and they may say afternoon at 9 am or 7 pm. whatever. It's also not exactly said in a super friendly way, there isn't a smile or eye contact, it's just afternoon.
Hey sexy baby girl hunny pretty girl sweet lady woman sugar etc etc -men. on the street (I would say on the sidewalk but there aren't many of them) try to get as many words in as possible as if they throw all of them at you at once it's going to make a difference....

Jansport - a backpack or book bag. they use the brand name like we use Kleenex
I've also noticed that a lot of people talk very low, I often have a hard time hearing or understanding them. especially the cashiers at IGA and people who work at SGU... and I hate asking people to repeat themselves 10 times. and I've noticed that other people, like the bus drivers talk very loud and fast. haha. either way I lose!

-When two men greet each other they bump fists... but in a much more relaxed way than say the Obama's famous fist bump, Lee says I still haven't gotten it, I try too hard.
- When walking along the road & a bus asks if you want a ride the women are so incredibly discrete I often can't tell if they've said yes or no until the driver pulls over and the boy opens the door. They either slightly nod or shake their head or to say no they wave their hand the way you would check to see if something is hot or to say yes they point their finger at the bus. haha. it's crazy to me.

Birthday in Grenada!
I haven't updated in quite a while... I have been really busy, I've started babysitting a few days a week for a family & there's Limes & pool day & my sweet husband & my friend Chris is having a baby (maybe today!!) & it was my birthday & I've been building a website (not for a purpose really... it's just so much fun & I love doing it so I made a website! someday soon I'll share it.... ) and then there is another obsession that recently entered my life......... Dexter. dun dun dunnnn
I can't say that I suggest the show to others -mainly for violence, nudity, and language reasons....... but other than that, it's amazing! A friend gave me the first 3 seasons to watch and I've been hooked.. every evening I can be found staring into my computer doing 1 of 3 things... covering my eyes because something scary is going on, rolling my eyes are dexter's stupid sister, or laughing b/c it's so clever.
so anyway.......... this past Tuesday I had the pleasure of celebrating my 23rd Birthday in paradise.
The day started out with a surprise on my computer, Lee left a note and a bracelet we had saw in the mall for me :) We also had a funny moment the day before when I came home from the store with a bag of Sunchips (b/c we don't buy chips often b/c they're expensive) and 2 LLBs and I said "Look what I got us for my birthday!!" and Lee said...... "are you serious" and he goes to his closet and pulls out a bag of Sunchips and Mt Dew! hahaha he knows me so well! :) So we had lots of chips and pop!!
Lee had class & lab all day Tuesday so in the morning I went to Grand Anse Beach with Amber & Sarah (another Sarah.lol) and then we had lunch at the Owl with Michelle, Alfonso, Sonia, and Adriana.... and during lunch there was a 22 degree halo that formed around the sun!! it was incredible! Lunch was so fun and delicious and my friends here are so sweet.. they made me cards and brought a flower and bought me lunch :)
After lunch and a trip to the store I went to Adriana's because she baked me a cake!! It was the first cake she had ever made! It was so sweet of her because otherwise I would not have had cake at all!
Afterward I went home to get ready to spend time with Lee after his classes and I found another surprise on my computer! When he came home for lunch he left a necklace I pointed out to him a few weeks before at the mall hanging on the corner of my laptop :)
We went down to Spiceland Mall to get smoothies!! Unfortunately I decided to try something new and ended up not liking it, Sour Sop -yuck and Lee got grapefruit... so we ended up switching. We drank our smoothies in the field next to the mall where some local club teams were playing cricket. I don't know anything about cricket, but it was fun to watch for a while.

We headed over to Grand Anse Beach, which is just across the street with plans to take a walk and watch the sunset... however, so after getting on the beach I realized my camera battery was dead and I really wanted to take pictures.... so we hopped on a bus and came home to get my spare battery and ended up watching the sunset from campus, which was beautiful! Lee was so sweet even though I knew he was thoroughly frustrated with having to go home to get the battery... but it was my birthday! We then got BACK on a bus to go to La Boulangerie for dinner. Luckily it was a Tuesday so buses were running very frequently and we only traveled in about a 2 mile radius.

It was very busy, but so fun and so memorable - and my first 'married' birthday! Hopefully Lee and I have many many many more birthdays together... but I only have 1 more in Grenada.
